Prevent Fluid Retention Naturally

While all teas will help you, green tea and horsetail are the most recommended for treating and eliminating fluid retention.

Fluid retention is a condition that is not very serious but can cause different complications. Doctors say this is a symptom that comes from a more severe disease or imbalance that needs attention at all costs.

What should I know about water retention?

This disorder is characterized by the accumulation of water and other liquid substances in the body. It occurs when the blood vessels draw too much fluid to the tissues and cannot be completely eliminated.

Fluid retention is more common in women and it is essential to know the causes in order to be able to treat it adequately.

You should know that the body constantly balances the percentages and levels of fluids according to hormonal movements. When we drink more water than necessary, the body eliminates the excess through sweat or urine.

The problem arises when it is not possible to either remove this liquid or maintain equilibrium. This is called “retention”.

Some of the most common causes of fluid retention include:

  • Deficient food
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • An unbalanced diet
  • High intake of salt or heavily seasoned foods
  • Liver disorders or problems
  • Poor heart or kidney function
  • Ingestion of certain drugs or chemicals
  • Lack of protein or certain nutrients
  • A too sedentary life
  • The pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • At certain times of the monthly cycle

The most common symptoms of fluid retention are:

  • Increased weight for no apparent reason
  • Inflamed legs or hands
  • Palpitations
  • A general malaise
  • Cramps
  • Fragility or fatigue
  • Hypertension
  • Cellulite
  • Little urine

Foods to prohibit in case of water retention

  • Salt: it is essential to eliminate it from your diet or replace it with sea salt. You can also season your dishes with seaweed, herbs or cardamom.
Please note: cold cuts, smoked meats, preserves, purees, prepared foods, sauces, mayonnaise. Cheeses, frozen products, instant soups or broths, soy sauce, condiments etc. contain large amounts of “hidden” salt.
  • Saturated fats and red meats.
  • Cow’s milk: this is due to its high fat content. Skimmed milk or lactose-free milk are also not recommended because they are chemically modified and require even more work on the body.
In addition, milk tends to “stick” to the intestinal walls, which prevents proper elimination of waste. Replace the milk with vegetable milks such as almond, rice, millet etc.
